I want coming out in college to be a small deal, and being gay to be a big deal here – this place is going to be like Amsterdam when I’m done with it. Seriously, everyone here is going to want to be gay.

I came out to my friends in college in November in my first year, having split up with my girlfriend, I went out with now LGBT VP Sophie Lynchy on a big gay night out which I will never talk to anyone about, and told the first person I saw the next day, Huw Williams, that I was hungover because I went to pulse the night before and that I went there because I’m gay now, so that’s what I do now. Of course I’ve not been back to pulse since then. I blurted the same to my mum over skype soon after. Since then I’ve told my Brother and Sister over the last year.

And since then they’ve been introduced to my boyfriend Alex as well, who just graduated from college, but came out in his 2nd year, and to his Dad this year.

No-one has ever reacted badly when I’ve told them, in college or anywhere. They’ve only ever been a little surprised since I’m not camp at all (aside my collection of toiletries from lush). Maybe I’m lucky, or maybe I’m just discovering that the stigma against being gay is starting to disappear across the UK. Of course there are pockets of bigoted and closed minded thinkers around still. but what we have do do now as an LGBT community is celebrate our sexualities, and live openly and proudly.

Which is what Bi-Monthly is all about. Every two weeks on a Friday night in the college bar is gay night. I don’t know yet what it’s going to entail, apart from that a bunch of people – Straight Gay and all in between – will be organising it, and that it’s going to be awesome.

So whoever you are and whatever you are – check out the LGBT society’s Facebook page & Twitter, and get involved with Bi-Monthly, look out for our pastel posters.

Honestly, this place is going to be like Amsterdam by the time I’m done with it.
